Installed correctly, this 10 inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Bollard is capable of stopping a heavy vehicle at significant speeds. But also, it’s sheer size makes it an intimidating barrier. It is also a good choice to protect gas utilities, electrical cabinets and transformers, traffic light cabinets and other crucial utilities. 

Larger Pipes make Better Deterrents

Not only will 10″ pipes protect better than 6″ or 8″ pipes in an accidental collision, the 10 inch Pipe is more intimidating to would be ram-raiders. This makes the 10 inch pipe desirable for use as building entrance barricade protection.

Going further, set the pipes into 30″ Diameter, 36″ deep footings, reinforce the pipe interior with 4 sticks of rebar, and reinforce the footing with some rebar hoops, and you have a very staunch bollard. Each bollard installation, including the concrete weighs about 2650 lbs! That kind of weight doesn’t move very easily.

Alert: Galvanized does not hold paint worth a darn because it's acts like a non-stick frying pan, so don't choose galvanized if you are hoping to paint pipe. Leave galvanized be, or cover it with a bollard cover, don't paint it!
Structural ASTM A500 Grade A is often typical. Untested and Rejected pipe doesn't necessarily meet fluid pressure tests, but is usually OK for bollard applications that aren't critical.

You must have a way to receive delivery. Trucks don't usually come with a fork and pipe has to be forked from the side of truck. Smaller pipe under 150 lbs can be offloaded by hand, but the driver may not be happy about it. Note: "Forks" is short for forklift, Lull, Track Loader with forks, Skid Steer with forks etc.
