6 inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Bollard
Medium Duty Bollard
6 inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe is the most popular pipe used for medium duty bollards. Go into any parking lot with bollards, and they are probably 6-inch Schedule 40. They are often used to at heads of parking spots to stop cars from proceeding onto a sidewalk. The 6 inch is also commonly used to protect storefronts from both errant vehicles, but also to deter ram raids.
6 inch Schedule 40 Tips
The most common length used is 84″, or 7 feet. This is because the stock pipe often comes in 21 footers, and to avoid waste from drop, 3 are cut out of the stock with no waste.
For a very sturdy 6″ bollard, the footing should be 18″ in diameter and 4 feet deep. With this setup, you will want to use an 8 foot pipe so that you have 4 feet above grade for visibility.
To “stiffen” bollard further, you can drop 2 or 3 full length sticks of 1/2″ rebar inside to be embedded into concrete when filled.
The BOSS says…
Everybody’s got some 6-inch SCH40 pipe bollards around their lots and entries because they do a good job at stopping slow moving cars and keep sign posts from getting bent over. If it gets hit pretty hard, like a car at 15 mph, it may bend a bit or the footing may shift, but it should take small bumps by car-parkers almost indefinitely.
