6 inch Schedule 80 Steel Pipe Bollard

Heavy Duty Bollard

The 6 inch Schedule 80 Steel Pipe Bollard has a much thicker wall than the 6 inch Schedule 40 Bollard. These can be used for storefront protection or anywhere you want a heavy duty bollard. If using to protect from ram raids, be sure the concrete footings are commensurate with the strength of these pipes. Otherwise it’s a waste of money.

Balancing a Bollard’s Points of Failure

When a bollard fails in a collision, either the steel will bend or shear off, or the footing will shift or tilt, or some degree of both. When trying to minimize vehicle penetration (vehicle getting past the bollard), I very stiff pipe, like the Schedule 80, will perform best if the footing is heavy and perhaps reinforced. That way, the bollard may remain upright longer at the moment of impact.

Counterpoint: Designing in Intentional Failure

If the Bollard is not protecting people or real property, and is for instance, in the middle of a parking lot, or simply holds a sign, you may want to plan in failure to protect the vehicle occupants. These might be called passive bollards. Passive bollards should not create catastrophic damage or injury when hit. Not unlike break-away signs, they should purposely fail when hit at higher speeds. In this case, schedule 80 is definitely “too strong” of a bollard. Basically, be sure you need this weight of pipe for your application.

The BOSS says…

Hey, Schedule 80 Pipe is the fat cousin of the Schedule 40 Pipe, and can really stop a small truck from smashin’ into your Deli entry if installed right, and the truck isn’t going too fast.

But don’t just stick 6 inch Schedule 80 anywhere. My nephew hit one of those suckas when the sun was in his eyes in the middle of a parking lot. It did not budge. The car did not fare very well. Luckily for him, the airbags all went off.

If you specify a pipe here, please be sure you haven't selected one in previous field. Otherwise, leave this blank.
A minimum of 4 is required.
Alert: Galvanized does not hold paint worth a darn because it's acts like a non-stick frying pan, so don't choose galvanized if you are hoping to paint pipe. Leave galvanized be, or cover it with a bollard cover, don't paint it!
Structural ASTM A500 Grade A is often typical. Untested and Rejected pipe doesn't necessarily meet fluid pressure tests, but is usually OK for bollard applications that aren't critical.

You must have a way to receive delivery. Trucks don't usually come with a fork and pipe has to be forked from the side of truck. Smaller pipe under 150 lbs can be offloaded by hand, but the driver may not be happy about it. Note: "Forks" is short for forklift, Lull, Track Loader with forks, Skid Steer with forks etc.
