Heavy Duty Bollard

The 8 inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Bollard is a large diameter bollard capable of stopping a heavier vehicle at significant speeds. It is a nice size pipe to use in barricades for storefront protection where 6 inch Schedule 40 does not seem adequate. It might also be a good choice to protect gas utilities, electrical cabinets and transformers, traffic light cabinets and other crucial utilities. 

Larger Pipes make Better Deterrents

Not only will 8″ pipes protect better than 6″ pipes in an accidental collision, the 8 inch Pipe is more intimidating to would be ram-raiders. This makes the 8 inch pipe more desirable for use as building entrance barricade protection.

Going further, set the pipes into 4 foot deep footings, reinforce the pipe interior with 4 sticks of rebar, and reinforce the footing with some rebar hoops, and you have a staunch bollard.

Goiing further yet, set the line of bollards in a trench and reinforce with rebar. Set them 4.5-5 feet apart. Now they are all tied together in a common trench footing.

Finally, if you want a crazy strong barrier, use 8 inch Schedule 80 in this design. Like a BOSS!

Alert: Galvanized does not hold paint worth a darn because it's acts like a non-stick frying pan, so don't choose galvanized if you are hoping to paint pipe. Leave galvanized be, or cover it with a bollard cover, don't paint it!
Structural ASTM A500 Grade A is often typical. Untested and Rejected pipe doesn't necessarily meet fluid pressure tests, but is usually OK for bollard applications that aren't critical.

You must have a way to receive delivery. Trucks don't usually come with a fork and pipe has to be forked from the side of truck. Smaller pipe under 150 lbs can be offloaded by hand, but the driver may not be happy about it. Note: "Forks" is short for forklift, Lull, Track Loader with forks, Skid Steer with forks etc.
